With age, our skin often begins to loosen and wrinkle and gravity begins to pull the skin downward. Around the eye, this shows up as drooping upper eyelids and sagging and baggy lower eyelids. Some patients also have drooping eyebrows that push the eyelid down.
If eyelid drooping and sagging is making you look older than you feel, you may want to consider eyelid surgery called blepharoplasty. This outpatient surgery can lift the upper eyelids and remove the bags under the eyes. A refreshed, rejuvenated and wider field of view is the result.
The upper eyelid blepharoplasty removes extra eyelid skin in a 20-30 minute outpatient surgery. Sutures are left in place for a week and the eyelids may have some swelling or bruising for a few days. Sometimes insurance will cover the cost of the surgery if the heavy eyelid is obstructing the upper vision.
The lower eyelid blepharoplasty is usually performed from inside the eyelid leaving no visible scar. This 30-minute outpatient surgery removes the fat pockets that cause bags underneath the eyelids. No sutures are generally needed and the eyelids may have some swelling or bruising for a few days.
Other eyelid surgeries that are sometimes needed include ptosis repair of the eyelid muscle for very droopy upper eyelids and lower eyelid tightening for loose lower eyelids. Some patients have ectropion (out-turning) or entropion (in-turning) of the eyelids that need repair.
Patients who are bothered by the eyelid skin folds or bags and choose to have blepharoplasty are some of the happiest patients who have cosmetic surgery. The risks of surgery are low and the results are obvious.
